See Things from Another Perspective

Difficulty:  Not very.
Audience:  People who are stuck and may be seeing their problem from one or a limited number of perspectives.
Suggested Time:  5 to 10 minutes.

If you are in a hurry or short on resources, it is good to have a quick technique up your sleeve.  This is useful if people have a problem that seems intractable, or to deflect potential conflict, or even as an ice-breaker.  This approach encourages the important value of 'empathy', while being a useful method for solving problems.

The approach is to ask people to see something from the perspective of someone else.  Here are a few ideas to get your started:
  • How would you see the situation/act if you were a twitcher?
  • Or a 'roadie' with a rock band?
  • Or a telecommunications engineer?
  • Or a sculptor?
  • Or a scout leader?
  • Or your Mum?
  • Or a script writer?
  • Or a sheriff in the wild west?
  • Or your grade 4 teacher?
This approach relies on some imagination, and often works well when people are in small groups, so they can pool their ideas.

If you have some other 'perspectives', please add a Comment.
